The emotional and psychological impact of giving CPR in the community is very real. In those moments, people step forward without warning, often without training, and do everything they can to save a life. Yet once the sirens fade and the crisis passes, support for those individuals is almost non-existent.
Emma Carey understands this better than most. She experienced it first-hand when she had to resuscitate a friend in a community venue. That moment stayed with her. And rather than moving on, Emma asked an important question: what happens to the people who step in to help?
As a Queen’s Nurse and local Health Visitor, Emma decided something had to change. In September last year, she launched a new initiative in Rossendale and Bury, bringing together a resuscitation nurse, community first responders, and people with lived experience. The result is a monthly support group that offers space, understanding, and compassion where there was none before.
Emma saw a gap, and she filled it, with care, leadership, and humanity. It is a privilege to recognise her with this Excellence in Heart Care Award.
