Greater Manchester ICD Support Group

The Greater Manchester ICD Support Group was established in 2026 through a collaboration between ICD patients, specialist nurses and partners across Manchester’s leading hospitals, including Wythenshawe, North Manchester General and MRI. NW Hearts Charity played a central role in bringing the group together, helping to create a supportive network for people living with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

The group exists to support, educate and connect individuals who have experienced life-changing cardiac events. Living with an ICD can be both physically and emotionally challenging, and the Support Group provides a welcoming space where patients can share experiences, build confidence and access trusted information.

Family members and carers are also warmly encouraged to get involved—whether by attending meetings or connecting with others who understand the realities of supporting someone with a heart condition.

With ongoing support from NW Hearts Charity, the group delivers a regular programme of meetings across Greater Manchester. These sessions feature contributions from clinicians alongside lived experience from patients, covering the issues that matter most to those living with an ICD.

Each meeting is designed to be informative, practical and inclusive—offering opportunities to ask questions, take part in open discussion, and connect with others. Together, we are building a stronger, more informed and better supported ICD community across Greater Manchester.

Below is a link to a small clip that gives an insight into the work that we do which helped us win the MFT 2019 excellence award.

Dr Malhotra spoke to Patients at a recent meeting held at All Saints Church, Hale Barns. This is a small extract of Dr Malhotra’s speech that afternoon which you can listen to below.
