Successful First Year for Wigan Cardiac Patient Support Group

Wigan support group attendees at the December 2025 meeting

A cardiac patient support group in Wigan has celebrated a successful first year with a festive themed December meeting. The group supports people living with heart conditions through peer connection, practical advice and shared experience.

Run in partnership with NW Hearts Charity, the group launched in 2025 to provide a welcoming, informal space for patients and their families to learn how to live well with a cardiac condition. Open to anyone affected by heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmias (including pacemakers and ICDs) and valvular conditions, the group has seen strong attendance, with many participants returning regularly.

Each session offers the chance to meet others with similar experiences, hear from guest speakers and access support in a relaxed, friendly environment. Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with one describing it as “the best day of the month,” while another said the group “has meant the world to me.”

James White, Chief Executive of NW Hearts Charity, said:

“This group is a brilliant example of how the right support, in the right place, can make a real difference. Hearing directly from patients about the confidence, reassurance and hope they gain from these sessions underlines just how valuable peer support is alongside clinical care. We’re proud to support this project and look forward to building on its success.”

Following a strong first year, the group will continue into 2026 with monthly meetings at the Badon Powell Scout Centre on Greenough Street, ensuring more people across the area can access support and feel less alone on their cardiac journey.
